Radicalesbians, the first Lesbian organization with an explicitly Feminist agenda, spun off from the Gay Liberation Front in April 1970 when women of GLF held the first NYC all-women's dance. Later that Spring, lesbians from GLF and the Women's Movement, calling themselves the Lavender Menace, took over the NOW Congress to Unite Women and distributed the manifesto, woman-identified-woman, written by Radicalesbians. From these events, Lesbian-Feminist politics and culture were born. Radical Lesbian activism continues today embracing issues of class, racial justice, the arts, academic activism, and Queer and Trans Movements.
In celebration of an unbroken tradition of Radical Lesbian Activism, Hana Malia, Flavia Rando, Shawn(ta) Smith, Ellen Shumsky, and Fran Winant will share their experiences of activism in the turbulent times of the 1970's and today, and the impact activism has had on their lives. We invite you to participate in an intergenerational conversation about Lesbian Feminist activism - then and now. Marking the 40th Anniversary of Radicalesbians, there will also be a slide show of photographs from the book Portrait of a Decade 1968-1978: Photographs by Ellen Shumsky and panelists will be available to available to sign the book. |

SAGE Presents: An LGBT Activist Timeline
All are welcome to participate in this unique Pride event featuring speakers from the early LGBT rights movement in America. They will talk about their experiences then and how they feel things have progressed, followed by a Q&A/discussion session with the audience. $5 suggested donation. More info: 212-741-2247.
Speakers include:
Ellen Ensig-Brodsky
Having come out soon after Stonewall and during the rise of the Feminist Movement, Ellen launched her LGBT activism as co-founder of the Unitarian-Universalist Gay Concerns Committee in Huntington, Long Island. She then moved back to her roots in NYC, where she co-founded Pride Senior Network, participated in the Empire State Pride Agenda's Health & Human Services Network, and served as President of the Manhattan Borough-Wide Inter Agency Council on Aging (MBIAC)
Jim Fouratt
Jim was a co-founder of the Youth International Party (YIPPIE!), the Gay Liberation Front, and Act UP, as well as a founding board member of the NYC LGBT Community Center. He has been featured in numerous documentaries and provided commentary on CNN and Stephen Colbert, among others. Jim was a witness to and participant in the Stonewall rebellion, and has been inciting, shaping, fomenting and provoking American culture for over 40 years.
Jerry Hoose
A West Village resident for over forty years, Jerry participated in all four nights of the Stonewall riots and was part of the Christopher Street Liberation Day committee that organized the first Pride March. He went on to help found the first militant gay organization, the Gay Liberation Front (GLF), and was instrumental in putting together the first dances by and for gay people. He has lived a completely gay-centric existence ever since.
Rose Jordan
Rose was a Stonewall Rebellion participant, a member of the original Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee, a member of the New York Radical Feminists, a participant in the original Women's CoffeeHouse at 7th Avenue Southm, and co-chair of the NYC chapter of Daughters of Bilitis until it was disbanded. She was also host of The Lesbian Radio Show on WBAI-FM for six years, interviewing many feminist authors and activists.
Jay Kallio
Jay (formerly Joy) Kallio became an LGBT activist in 1972 after being fired for being a lesbian while employed by the NYS Division for Youth. Upon discovering that there were no laws or recourse to protect LGBT people from discrimination, Joy started with a position as Program Director for Lesbian Feminist Liberation, an offshoot of the Gay Activist Alliance, and spent many years fighting for legislative protections for LGBT people. Joy transitioned in 2006 to become Jay, and found there were few protections for transgender people in employment or health care access. He continues his fight for equal rights for all on this new frontier.
Barbara Police
One of the first women involved in the feminist movement, Barbara worked with Bella Abzug and other politicians on a number of projects, including Take Back the Night. She also worked on Majority Report, the first feminist newspaper, as well as many other publications over the years. Most recently, Barbara was one of the plaintiffs in Yetta Kurland's law suit to keep St. Vincent's open. |

Great Architecture or Alien Invader?
Meet guide Sam Turn at the Alamo Sculpture (The Big Black Cube) on Astor Place. Our tour takes us inside 41 Cooper Square, the new academic building designed by Thom
Mayne for Cooper Union. The building, with its advanced design and futuristic facade has created great controversy. Some call the effect "tough and sexy," as the architect extracts beauty from the crudest materials-raw concrete, steel I-beams, and metal screens. The walk is easy, but includes the grand staircase, the social heart of the building. Dutch treat lunch follows. Walk limited to 15. Registration begins July 20. |

Celebrating Financial Reform: What Happened and What's Next?
Hosted by The Atlantic Philanthropies, - Financial Reform Celebrating Financial Reform: What Happened and What's Next? is open to SAGE Members, but registration on their website is required. Click here for more information and to register>>
With President Obama's signature on 21 July 2010, consumer protections were established and strengthened regulations were put in place that will provide increased oversight and transparency of the financial sector as a whole. Throughout the campaign for financial reform, progressive advocates made sure that the interests of those most impacted by the financial crisis were among those that shaped the financial reform bill, and that their needs were addressed in the final legislation.
In this panel discussion, advocates who were active in the campaign for reform will discuss the issues that created the crisis, the ways in which the campaign mobilized and worked to advocate for reform and, now that it has passed, what opportunities and challenges exist in terms of implementation.
A wine and cheese reception will follow.
Panelists
* Vivien Labaton, Atlantic Philanthropies, Moderator
* Rev. Eugene Barnes, Central Illinois Organizing Project
* Lisa Donner, Americans for Financial Reform (AFR)
* George Goehl, National People's Action (NPA)
* Heather McGhee, Demos
George Goehl
George Goehl is the Executive Director for National People's Action (NPA). National People's Action, founded in 1972, exists to create a society in which racial and economic justice are realized in all aspects of society, resulting in more equity in work, housing, health, education, finance, and other systems central to our well-being. A community organizer, strategist, and trainer for 15 years, George has crafted national campaigns on affordable housing, predatory lending, and immigrant justice issues. He began his career as the founding president of the Coalition of the Low-Income and Homeless Citizens, an organization that won the fist Housing Trust Fund in the state of Indiana and the fist Housing Trust Fund campaign in the country run by low-income and homeless people. Then, as an organizer at Blocks Together, a multicultural organization on the Westside of Chicago, George led several successful campaigns to address inequalities in housing, safety and municipal services. George came to National People's Action for the first time in 1996 and designed a national campaign to pressure HUD to address fraud and abuse within the FHA home loan program. This three-year organizing effort resulted in the Credit Watch Program, which holds lenders accountable for excessive defaults on FHA-insured mortgages. Later, as organizing director, George supervised the team that forced statewide anti-predatory lending regulations and legislation in Illinois. In 2004, George moved to the Center for Community Change to work as a strategist and field organizer for the organization's Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM). His work there included the launch of a national summit of immigrant and allied organizations from more than 30 states, and culminated in the implementation of the national Stop the Raids movement, in response to a wave of immigration raids that separated young children from their parents. Returning to National People's Action in 2007 as the third executive director in its 35 year history, George has led the organization through a forward thinking reorganization and transformation. As a result, the organization has significantly expanded its affiliate base, built a new and talented staff team and opened the organization's first Washington DC office. George lives in Chicago, with his wife, Julienne, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

RSVP by July 11, 2011 to Michele D’Amato – 212-741-2214 or mdamato@sageusa.org
Did you know that September is one of the most active months for employers to make hiring decisions?
If we want to be hired THEN, we need to be active RIGHT NOW.
Come to the session and "activate" your search strategy!
This session will focus on a few specifics: (1) setting clear targets; (2) updating your resume; and (3) preparing yourself better for interviews and meetings. We'll be informal, so bring your questions. It'll be a helpful and interesting session!
